Rail Baltica integration projects completed in central Riga

Infrastructure facilities enabling the integration of the Rail Baltica railway system into Riga city centre have been commissioned. The works were carried out on Ģenerāļa Radziņa Embankment, in the area of the Riga Bus Station, the Central Market, and the adjacent area of Riga Central Station.

As part of the project, five intersections were reconstructed. Ģenerāļa Radziņa Embankment was rebuilt along its entire length, including the installation of a new road surface and the renewal of underground engineering infrastructure, such as external water supply and sewage networks, gas supply systems, and electricity distribution networks.

Bridges over the City Canal on Maskavas Street and Ģenerāļa Radziņa Embankment were also reconstructed. The bicycle path surface along the embankment was renewed, and a unique ramp for pedestrians and cyclists was constructed, providing future connectivity to the planned Rail Baltica railway bridge over the Daugava River.

Comprehensive landscaping works were carried out throughout the construction area. One of the project’s key objectives was to transform Ģenerāļa Radziņa Embankment into an environmentally friendly and accessible urban space. The previously run-down area opposite the Central Market, formerly used as a car park, has been converted into a new multifunctional public space featuring a well-designed recreation area.

Two central elements define the square: a wooden architectural structure and the symbolic focal point of the project – a red oak tree. For the convenience of visitors, the area is equipped with benches, bicycle racks, a public drinking water tap, waste bins, and modern lighting.

The project was implemented in accordance with the design-and-build principle, under which a single contractor was responsible for both design and construction works.
